Protect Pure Maths is a campaign to protect pure maths and advance the mathematical sciences in the UK.
What Is Protect Pure Maths?
Protect Pure Maths is a campaign to protect pure maths and advance the mathematical sciences in the UK.
Pure maths matters. Discoveries in pure maths are the wellspring for innovation in every area of academia and industry: AI, biotech, computing and data encryption to name just a few. Overall, researchers estimate that maths adds £208bn to the UK economy.
Pure maths has been a British success story too. From Alan Turing breaking the Enigma Code, to Andrew Wiles proving Fermat’s Last Theorem. From Roger Penrose’s Nobel Prize on the maths of black holes, to Hannah Fry’s millions of YouTube views.
However, despite its value to society, maths does not always receive the funding and support it warrants. Today, some UK universities are cutting back their pure maths provision. And new funding for artificial intelligence is at risk of overlooking the fundamental importance of maths to the discipline.
We launched Protect Pure Maths to campaign against further cuts and to ensure that the mathematical sciences are understood, valued and properly funded.
Our Objectives:
Protect Pure Maths has four objectives. To achieve them, we work collaboratively within the mathematical sciences, across academia and industry, and in the UK’s parliaments.
To ensure that maths funding properly reflects the value of maths to society
To ensure that maths is represented and understood in the UK’s parliaments
To strengthen the voice of industry in maths policymaking
To stop any further cuts to pure maths in universities
